In an attempt to save some money (and keep some materials from the landfill), we are making the effort to reuse, recycle, donate or sell whatever we can. We make some of our friends and family crazy with our tendency to want to save everything. But project salvage is paying dividends already.
There are basically three categories of things we save from the dumpster.
Salvage Category 1: Things we can reuse ourselves
Among other things, his includes electrical and plumbing fittings, wire, kitchen cabinets that will be repurposed as garage storage, and any lumber that is in good condition. All these things are cleaned and stashed away for future use.
Salvage Category 2: Things other people can use
Anything we have that still has good life in it but doesn’t fit in with our project goes to someone else. Some things, like the air conditioner/handler and a couple of screen doors, we have sold. Others, like the oven and some of the windows, go to Habitat for Humanity.
Salvage Category 3: Things that are worth money
Anything that has any value at the scrap yard makes its way there as soon as possible. (This project ain’t cheap, and we need to replenish the coffers!) This includes any wire that we can’t save, all kinds of metal, and the aluminum siding that we are very excited to be rid of.
Also, the guys at our local scrap yard are so friendly and helpful it’s actually kind of fun to go. And, of course, getting the money doesn’t hurt!
